QUOTATION FROM CONCLUDING REMARKS
“The first signs of a new Axial Age are now appearing on the horizon. They give us our only hope of being able to save our species from extinction. These signs indicate the coming of a cognitive breakthrough that could transition our culture and the institutions that have arisen out of that culture from their present state of planetary dysfunction into a state of planetary accommodation. This is now being defined among many in the world as a cosmic consciousness that recognizes an underlying implicate order in everything material and non material. With advancements in the physical sciences, and particularly in the areas of quantum physics and cosmology, many scientists and non scientists alike now see the continuance of our species as requiring the recognition of this underlying implicate order. And they are calling for a restructuring of our human society accordingly. They are coming to the realization that this way of viewing the animate and the inanimate will require the abandonment of much of past foundational thought; political, social, economic, religious—as well as scientific. In America the breakthrough had its epistemological emergence with the transpersonal discoveries of the transcendentalists who openly challenged the doctrinaire religious orthodoxy of the time; Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and the many others. The movement was also forming in Europe as a post empirical behavioral movement with the work of Carl Jung in the field of transpersonal depth psychology when he rejected the atheism and debasement of the human psyche to animalist impulse inherent in the Freudian psychology accepted generally at that time.”

We Have to Change the Way We Think

Essays from
David Anderson
Prominent scientists throughout the world are now telling us that before the end of the present century we may be facing a sudden and dramatic reversal in planetary sustainability. They point to a succession of dangerous environmental “tipping points” from which there can be no return. These essays acknowledge this concern. At the same time they show that our civilization is beginning to address these issues in the most fundamental way. We are slowly but surely changing the way we think.
